Zhuhai, a scenic coastal city, is one of the four earliest special economic zones (SEZs) in China. Situated at the southern part of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in Guangdong Province, Zhuhai looks upon Hong Kong - the Shopping Paradise - across the sea, borders Macao - Las Vegas of the Orient - to the south and sits 120 km southwest of Guangzhou. It consists of 3 districts ¨C Xiangzhou, Jinwan and Doumen - and 5 economic functional zones, namely, Hengqin New Area, Gaolan Port Economic Zone, Zhuhai National Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone, Wanshan Marine Development Experimental Zone and Zhuhai Free Trade Zone.
Zhuhai covers 7653 square kilometres, of which 1701 square kilometres are land. Nicknamed "the city of a hundred islands" for its 190 isles, Zhuhai had a population of 1.4912 million at the end of 2009. The local GDP stood at RMB 103.769 billion in 2009, while the GDP per capita was RMB 69,800.
Zhuhai was the pioneer in China's drive towards reform and opening-up. Xiangzhou in Zhuhai was established as a tax-free zone as well as a free port as early as 1908. It is the birthplace to a wealth of contemporary celebrities, the first prime minister of Republic of China Tang Shaoyi, the first consul-general of Qing Government in Honolulu Chen Fang, the first Chinese overseas student who obtained a PhD in the U.S. Rong Hong, the first vice-chancellor of Qinghua University Tang Guo'an, the first modern entrepreneur of China Tang Tingshu, painter and writer Su Manshu, the first world champion of P. R. China Rong Guotuan, carving artist Gu Yuan, to name a few.
According to the "Outline of the Plan for the Reform and Development of the Pearl River Delta (2008-2020)" released by the State Council in January 2009, Zhuhai is specified as the core city and transportation hub on the western bank of the Pearl River mouth.
Zhuhai is the most livable, appealing and business-friendly city in the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Metropolitan area.
